Have you guys tried OHIO? Only Handle It Once?

That means that when you pick up an object during an organizing session, you have to decide what to do with it right away

I have to physically label an area and decide it’s for x or y before I put it there, then I’ll go on a organizing binge or throw things in bins and boxes, really I just leave reminders of all my half completed projects all over the place, I used to practice GTD by David Allen it’s similar to OHIO in a way

Yes! This! If I were to try OHIO then I literally would never pick anything up to organize it.

I heard a tip online the other day about exactly this method and how it does not completely work for ADHD’ers. You can try it, and if it works for you, great. But if not, another approach is to break down tasks into much smaller, bite-size pieces. For example, instead of going through a big pile of inbox items and only handling them once, you pick up each item and quickly decide whether or not you can perform action on it. If not, put it in one pile, and if so, put it in a different pile. When you’re done, repeat the process with a different set of criteria, for example, take the actionable pile and ask yourself if you can do that action today, or in the next hour, or whatever. The emphasis is not lingering too long on any one item. that should break the cycle of indecision that ADHD’ers frequently get tripped up by.

I learned it from the most organized and productive person I know. It’s a wonderful tool.
