Why is it so hard to regulate your emotions?

I’ve been told many times throughout my life that I “overreact” and “take things too seriously.” I just want to know is this usual for everyone else with ADHD? Because I try to tell neuroregulars that I have no control over my emotions and they just can never believe me because they think I’m trying to do it on purpose when I’m not. Anyone else?

Me too. And it invites my doctor to put me on more meds. Plus both my kids have ADHD so it was always emotionally traumatic in our house. Now, as adults, I feel such guilt for not teaching them to better regulate themselves.

Absolutely, you summed things up perfectly. Sometimes the emotional dysregulation is the worst part about having ADHD:

Yea I get that alot to. It's the main reason why I'm so neutral nowadays. It hurts but I got tired of people calling me things.

Yes!!! 100%. I’ve always been called “dramatic,” when I’m just reacting as natural as possible. I get too excited, too sad, too mad, too silly, too happy, too loud. My emotions are just really big and I can’t control them.
