Masking and Meltdowns

Opening a discussion to address the topics of masking and meltdowns. Is this something specific to ASD? Or can this happen with other diagnoses as well? For me the meltdowns were severe when I was a child, and as an adult I mask extremely well and would never let anyone but my significant other see me during a meltdown, so no one else close to me really knows what it’s like. I’m interested to see if anyone here has had to deal with something similar.

I have PMDD, so I can have some spectacular meltdowns - my poor husband is so patient when I do. CBT has really helped me learn to take control and find healthy coping strategies - it doesn't change how I feel, but it has helped to reduce the severity of my meltdowns.

I have to mask many of my emotions because i also feel embarrassed to have those emotions, no less express them! I’ve learned to manage actual meltdowns much better - with the help of therapy & meds.

I just learned the term for this: “emotional dysregulation” Doesn’t make it any easier to manage, but at least I know I’m not crazy. 🤷🏼‍♀️
